As early as 1867, Congregationalists conducted their first services in the old adobe courthouse, which had a large, well-lit room with a raised platform.  In the ensuing years, the First Congregational Church occupied different sites in Santa Barbara, until they acquired property at State and Padre Streets, and built the current church.  In the 1960s, the congregation affiliated with the United Church of Christ.
