In 1869 Santa Barbara counted about 2000 , 19 people formed the First Presbyterian Church and gathered in private homes and then in the Ruiz Adobe (canon Perdido and Chapala ) which became the Court House. In 1874 , the congregation built a frame and brick building with a soaring 130 foot steeple, visible at sea. Dedicated in 1925, the new church accommodated 800 parishioners was dedicated in 19218 but on June 29 1925, it was damaged by the devastating earthquake.

In 1973, a new sanctuary located on State Street and Constance was dedicated. The church is very active in the community, often hosting concerts and interfaith memorial services with Hospice Santa Barbara.
